Canning Demo with Jennifer in the Barn

Dear Members,
     Well we did it!  After many years of considering our options, we finally decided to take credit and debit cards in the farm store.  We are finding that many of our members are limiting their purchases based on the amount of cash they have on hand.  I never want to turn down a sale, so we have purchased a “square” reader and are happy to charge your credit or debit card as another form of payment.  Hurrah for progress!
     August is going to bring many changes to Laguna Farm.  Ellen, who has worked in the farm store is moving on with her last day being the 14th.  Gerardo who works in the field, farm store and Sebastopol farmers market will attend his last market on the 16th and Rose who packs your produce bins and ties your salad bags will finish out her commitment to the farm on the 1st.  
     Please take the time over the next couple of weeks to give these wonderful employees your well wishes and thank them for their dedication to Laguna Farm and local agriculture.  They will be missed.

Raw Zucchini with Summer Veggies
For my birthday, I asked Cody for a Veggetti and I never ate zucchini cooked again.  The veggetti can be found at Bed, Bath and Beyond or Walgreen’s  (call ahead)or online. It is a simple tool that can be substituted with a cheese grater if you are not wanting to add another gadget to your kitchen.  Anyway, for your Raw Zucchini with Summer Veggies dish, you will want to grate or spirilize or grate 2 medium zucchini.  Sprinkle 1 tsp salt over the zucchini and add 1/2 cup halved sungold tomatoes, 1/4 cup prepared pesto and a sprinkle of Parmesan or Asiago cheese over the top.  Wallah, a cool, no-cook summer meal.

Carrots, Strawberries, Chard, Beets, Lemons, Plums, Cucumbers, Celery

Strawberry Cucumber Juice
6 Strawberries, 1 Large Cucumber, 1 Apple, 2 Carrots and a generous amount of ice combine to make this beautiful and tasty juice.  I ran all the ingredients (except the ice) through my blender then strained the pulp out by pouring the mixture through a small cloth muslin produce bag.  The remaining juice was poured over ice and enjoyed during the HOTest day of the year.
