December 9, 2014

Happy December!
Dear Members,
We are bracing for the largest storm system Sonoma County has seen in seven years, according to today’s published Press Democrat article.  It is being described as Herculean!  Laguna Farm is an awesome place to experience the storm and we hope that you come out on Thursday to see the rising flood-waters.  If the power is out, we will not be able to answer the phone.  Please see our facebook page for up-to-date information regarding road closures and farm access.  If it gets really wild, we will close the farm store early.  Worry not, Diego will deliver CSA shares to all the homes and drop-sites and will have the walk-in open and available for CSA pick-up.

Laguna Farm
Quiet Before The Storm

For a while now, we have been announcing our Gabled Boxes and Gift Certificates that can be purchased in our online store.
If you would like to order in time for the gifting season, you would need to order before Saturday December 13. We will have our gifts available for sale at the farm during the week of the 16th along with a few other locally crafted goodies.  As always, give us a ring if you need help ordering.  We are happy to help you in the process.
Be well,
Jennifer Branham

Fennel and Cabbage Slaw Produce Box Contents:
Salad mix, Yellow Onions, Sweet Potatoes, Carrots, Cabbage, Fennel, Collard Greens.
Fennel Cabbage Slaw Recipe
1 pound cabbage shredded
1 large fennel bulb sliced very thin
2 large carrots, shredded
1/4 cup thinly sliced scallion greens
1 teaspoon minced ginger
1/4 cup fresh orange juice
 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
Coarse salt and ground pepper
In a large bowl, toss together cabbage, fennel, carrots, and scallion greens. In a small bowl, whisk together ginger, orange juice, oil, and vinegar; season with salt and pepper. Pour dressing over vegetables and toss to coat completely. Refrigerate at least 30 minutes (or up to 1 1/2 hours). Toss slaw before serving.

Juice Box Contents:
Carrots (2 Bunches), Chard, Collards, Apples, Valencia Oranges, Fennel.
Apple Fennel juice

Fennel goes well with an array of juicing ingredients including apples, pears, celery and carrots. Fennel juice has properties that make it a useful detoxifier and also an aid to digestion.

Collards, like kale, are a super food that blends well in green smoothies.  One of many things I like about collards is that you get more juice per bunch over any other green.  If you use your juice box for recipes beyond juice and smoothies, consider using the collard greens in wraps, removing the stems and treating it like a tortilla.  The stems can be juiced of course and blend well with any citrus, fruit or root such as carrots or beets.

Bulk Cabbage Available
We harvested all of our cabbage and are offering it in bulk for a limited time.  Order online or call us for details.
