Dear Members,

Half-Wild Farm chickens

I have been having fun revamping and rearranging the farm store.  Instead of having the store goods on the cement outside the walk-in, I moved it to the other side of the barn where you can see it from the breezeway. So far, members have commented that it looks nice!

Last week I mentioned that Heather of Half-Wild Farm, who has been supplying our CSA members with eggs on a “pre-order” basis, is now selling her eggs in the store from 1:00 to 3ish. Just to clarify, it is best for them that you pre-order the eggs. During the summer, eggs will likely only be available on pre-order.  Eggs are only available for members who pick up at the farm as these are direct from the egg farmer and can not be delivered.

Following up with last week’s news, my interview for KQED Newsroom was canceled, so I won’t be on the air this week.

Be well,

Jennifer Branham-Burns
CSA trades and exchanges:  If you pick your produce up at the farm, you will see an exchange basket.  This basket is for you to swap produce on the exchange list.  Please limit your exchanges to what is available in the basket, and pay for the items you take out of the store. This way we ensure there is enough diverse produce in the store for everyone.  Thanks!
Produce Boxes
Salad, kale, radishes, fingerling potatoes, california oranges or tangerines and yellow onions.

Laguna Farm Radishes
Rainbow Radishes

Last evening, I brought home a bag of salad greens, a red onion and a bunch of radishes.  I planned on making a big salad for dinner complete with shaved cabbage, nuts, dried cranberries and saute’d chicken.  As I was shaving the cabbage, my 15 year old son ate the entire bunch of radishes! He would tell you that eating radishes raw, strait off the bunch is the best recipe.  Here are a few more for you to consider.
Spicy Quick Pickled Radishes:  Easy and tasty, this recipe enhances your radishes and preserves them too.
Honey Roasted Radishes: If you are not a fan of the spicy radish flavor, this is the recipe for you.  I love how it incorporates the tops of the radish.  This is my go-to radish recipe (when my kid doesn’t eat the whole bunch).
Saute’d Radishes:  If you don’t want to heat up the oven and roast your radishes, consider saute’d radishes.  With these simple ingredients, what is not to love?
Juice Boxes:

Kale, Chard, Beets, California tangerines, mint and carrots.

Green Orange Juice
Green Orange Juice

I am trying to figure out a name for my new favorite juice.  I started calling it “green orange juice”, but that felt like an oxymoron. Hit reply if you have a suggested name for orange juice with kale blended in. I drink it over ice with a straw.  Many fruit juices can be enhanced nutritionally by simply blending in a few leaves of kale.  I like mine sweet, so I usually add a few pitted dates along with 4 leaves of kale to a 8 ounces of orange juice over ice.  The same can be enjoyed with lemon juice!
