Greetings, this newsletter is going to be short and sweet, as there is still a lot of clean up and catch up to do after Laguna Fest.  The event was a success, with the best and the brightest of our community coming out to share skills, food, crafts, information and music.  Thank you so much to everyone who attended and took part in the event!  We had so many volunteers (too many to mention by name) who dedicated themselves to the cause.  We could not have had such a successful event without them.

Be Well,
Jennifer Branham

Laguna Fresh Produce

In Your CSA Box this week:

From Laguna Farm, please enjoy our “Naturally Grown” salad mix, beets, spring onions, cucumbers or squash, tomatoes, cauliflower and California avocados!

Thanks for donating your box!

Food for Thought, The Ceres Project, your friends and family, as well as Laguna Farm appreciate it when you donate your box while you are going on vacation.  Share the bounty, and when you need to leave town and can’t use your CSA, let us know how we can get it to someone who will enjoy it.  It helps the farm not to have too many “skips” during our peak growing season.

Farm Market News:
Because of the festival on the farm last Saturday, we did not attend the Santa Rosa Farm Market.  We do intend to be there this Saturday and throughout the rest of the year.  See you at the market!

July 10, 2012

This week is the final push before our festival scheduled for this Saturday July 14th.  We have a whole host of classes and workshops scheduled throughout the day.  Parking will be out in the field, and we are asking for a $10 – $20 sliding-scale donation.  In addition to the workshops, we will have our clothing swap, tours, vendors, food and music.
The music for the night includes our opening act:  Uncle Bill, to be followed by the Black Sheep Brass Band, then our headliner The Jug Dealers.
We could still use a few things for the event, so we are reaching out to our community to ask for:  Shade structures such as market umbrellas and easy-up canopies.  Our clothing swap / embellishment – upcycle area is excepting clothing, costumes, fabric, notions, and trims.
Lastly, we could always use more help setting up, on the day of the event and on Sunday morning for clean-up.  Let us know if you might be able to help, and we will see you at the festival!

 Be Well,
Jennifer Branham

Thursday 7/5/12 is the “First Thursday” of the month.  This means, we offer guided tours of Laguna Farm!  The first tour of the day begins at 2:00 with another tour to follow at 3:00.  Please feel free to invite family and friends and get to know your farm!
We have seen some new faces on the farm, while members going on vacation have invited their friends and family to come to pick up their CSA box.  A few asked how they could continue to get fresh, beautiful produce and we were glad to sign them up.
Please pass the word around about Laguna Farm CSA, our Farm Tours and Laguna Fest.

Laguna Fest Volunteer Positions:

We are looking for a few people to help move classes in and out of the workshop zones.

We are also needing a few more folks to sign up for our information table.    Call 823-0823 or e-mail us if you can lend a hand.

Laguna Fest News!

We have the workshop schedule posted so you can pre-plan your day.  Some workshops have a limited number of spaces, so you will sign up on the day of the event.

Our clothing swap is receiving donations.  Feel free to bring your donations to the farm early so we can have the area set up for the event.  Donations are also accepted during Laguna Fest.

The Clothing swap will feature“up-cycling” where participants can add embellishments and get creative with their new digs.  If you have lace, trim, fabric, notions, thread, buttons, patches or anything that would be a cool addition to a garment, please bring those donation too.

We lost two KEY volunteers this week, and we are looking to fill these slots.  One being our “Green Mary Dish-wash Station Volunteer.  We are using reusable plates and utensils for our event and need someone to facilitate the dish-wash area, cycling in fresh wash water and cycling out the dirty.  The other volunteer position we would like to fill is someone to assist or stage manager.

We have two awesome bands:  The Jug Dealers and The Black Sheep Brass Band coming to party out the evening and we could use some assistance working with them.  If you would be willing  to take one either of these roles, let us know as soon as possible.

We will gather on July 14th at Laguna Farm for a full day of workshops, music, tours, food, speakers, vendors and fun.

After reading last week’s newsletter and hearing our concerns over the huge reduction in CSA numbers due to “vacation skips”, many members opted to donate their CSA box to either the Ceres Project or Food For Thought.  Thank you so much for your consideration! Our CSA is stabilizing, and while we are still looking for new members, we are feeling better about where we are at and appreciate the generosity of our members.
Make sure you have marked your calendar for Laguna Fest, July 14, 2012.  We have a whole host of activities lined up for the day. Spread the word far and wide, as friends and families would love to see the happenings at your local CSA farm!
Laguna Fest is currently accepting donations for our “clothing swap”.  This year, we are going to expand on last year’s popular event and we will “up-cycle” the clothing by providing participants with sewing machines, irons, fabric, patches and embellishments.  If you find a nice pair of jeans, you can cut them off, add trim and a patch and make it your own!  Please drop clothing donations off in the barn.  Men’s, women’s and children’s clothing in awesome condition appreciated.

June 12, 2012
Five minutes ago, Gerardo walked into the barn with 6 baskets of sweet sun gold tomatoes.  Summer is officially here at Laguna Farm, and the focus is irrigating the crops.  It is quite an art, moving the lines daily so all the fields get the water they need.  Nacho is putting in 12 to 14 hours a day with early morning and late evening irrigation as his focus.
In the office, we are getting up to 5 phone calls and e-mails a day from members wanting to put their CSA box on a “vacation hold”.  Our box numbers have dropped significantly as a result.  Please know that Community Shared Agriculture is a relationship that should be symbiotic in nature.  The farm agrees to grow the crops putting in the long hours and investing time in the spring so the summer bounty is abundant and plentiful for all our members.  We ask that you, as members, support the harvest by picking up your weekly share and if you need to go out of town, consider donating your box to one of our charities for a tax deduction.  The worthy folks at Food For Thought and the Ceres Project really appreciate it.  If you do have a friend or a family member who would like to pick up your box for you, we will gift both you AND them with a gift certificate for our farm store.

Be Well,
Jennifer Branham

Saturday morning we joined the vendors at the Santa Rosa “Original” Farm Market in its new location at the Wells Fargo Center.  We were welcomed by the northern Santa Rosa residents, several of whom walked to the market from their homes.  Some vendors were concerned that because a new market moved into the Vets. Memorial parking lot in east Santa Rosa, the creation of two Saturday markets would result in fewer sales for everyone.  I am confident that with over 170,000 people living in Santa Rosa alone, both markets could be filled with more vendors selling their wares and more residents buying local.
We have been getting great feedback on our preserved foods that are being created in the Laguna Farm Kitchen located at Capers & Co. in Sebastopol. We are selling basil, kale, and parsley pesto along with the now famous Green Garlic Dip in our farm store and  online!
Remember, Thursday June 7th we will be holding tours of Laguna Farm.  Join us at 2:00 or 3:00 for a 50 minute tour of our fields, greenhouse and CSA!

Saturday morning Cody and I visited the Original Santa Rosa Farmers Market in its new location at the Wells Fargo Center.  Laguna Farm will be selling at this market every Saturday beginning May 26th.  Please come out and visit us.  We are happy to serve the Santa Rosa community, and hope to draw new customers from the Russian River and towns north as well.
Beginning June 7th, we will resume our guided tours of Laguna Farm.  The tours are on the first Thursday of every month.  The first of the day being at 2:00 with another tour to follow at 3:00.  Please feel free to invite family and friends and get to know your farm!  We have a rookery of blue herons in the giant Eucalyptus tree by the Laguna.  It will be fun to watch these beautiful birds raise their young.
Thank you everyone for your continued support of our farm and markets.  We are still wanting to add new members to our CSA.  We see a large number of quits and skips during the summer months as members start to grow their own gardens and go on vacation.  Please support your CSA year-round.  If you do go on vacation, consider donating your box to a friend or family member or to one of our local charity groups.  We love to see new faces at the farm and people really appreciate the produce and often join themselves.

Be Well,
Jennifer Branham
